Houston

Cosmopolitan and urbane Houston is the largest city in the Lone Star state and the fourth largest city in the country. Dubbed the Space City, more than 2.2 million people call Houston their home. Houston is a sprawling city. Business districts, Houston’s famous downtown, world-class arts and culture, unique neighborhoods, and NASA’s Johnson Space Center are all found within Houston’s 1,552.9 km2 patch of land.

What’s Here

  • Houston’s 1,500-acre Memorial Park offers locals and visitors several tennis courts, an 18-hole golf course, walking trails, and a three-mile running course. Memorial Park is Houston’s answer to New York City’s famous Central Park.
  • As an economic powerhouse, Houston is home to twenty-five companies included in the prestigious Fortune 500 list. The only other city with more Fortune 500 companies within its limits? New York City.
  • Glenwood Cemetery is where some of Houston’s most iconic residents are buried. This is the resting place of over 20 former mayors and oil tycoons. Perhaps the most famous Houston resident buried in Glenwood is Howard Hughes, aviator, movie director, and engineer extraordinaire.
  • Fancy watching a performance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show? Landmark River Oaks Theater performs a weekly midnight series including the beloved musical every second Saturday of every month. This theater is distinct in its appearance thanks to its art deco style. The building also houses a bar and a lounge.

Calling all basketball fans! Houston Rockets, one of the most successful teams on the NBA, plays on their home court, the Toyota Center. Located downtown, Toyota Center can seat up to 18,300 people, and boasts more than a 100 VIP suites for its most important guests.

Schools

Houston is a center for research and healthcare institutions. It is home to the Texas Medical Center and its 42 member organizations. This medical center houses schools catering to students seeking to build a health-related career. Houston is also home to world-class academic institutions. The University of Houston and its 667-acre campus is the third largest university in Texas.
